Attractions in Palma de Mallorca

Basilica de Sant Francesc (Basilica of San Francisco)

The sober facade of this Gothic church contrasts with its baroque interior, but its real asset is the adjacent monastery.

With its simple Gothic architecture, its central fountain and the lemon trees, it is a real oasis of peace in the heart of the old town.

The only circular castle in Spain is so well preserved that it is hard to believe that it was built as a royal palace over 700 years ago. Since then it has been used as a military prison and as a mint.

Today it houses a museum of local history and offers its visitors a bell ver (beautiful view) over the bay of Palma from the top floor.

The coast and the port

The long coastline of the city illustrates the long love story of Mallorca with the sea, which ranges from small, traditional fishing boats to super yachts, naval ships and giant cruise ships.

The former La Llotja maritime exchange and the fenced government building Consulat del Mar are located at the eastern end – two important historical buildings that commemorate the beginning of Palma’s maritime heyday.

La Seu

The mighty sandstone cathedral that dominates Palma’s waterfront district is one of the largest and most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world.

Inside, it is just as impressive because of its size and proportions. The Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí, who rebuilt the church in the early 20th century, has several salient features.

Ever since the Muslim commanders built their Alcázar shortly after the Arab conquest in 902, a palace had been protruding from the city’s protective wall on the coast.

Today, with its mixture of Gothic and Moorish architectural styles, it testifies to the centuries-long conflicts between Moors and Christians.
